"A Bad Case of the Stripes" lesson Plan Ideas

A Bad Case of the Stripes, written by David Shannon, is a story about a young girl who is so involved with what other people thinks, she begins to break out in "stripes." Her worst fears come true as others laugh and ridicule her for finding different. The character must learn what "being yourself" means and how to overcome fears about self-acceptance and empathy. The illustrations are also very colorful and will keep elementary children entertained over and over again. A Bad Case of the Stripes is listed at a 3.5 reading book level, so it is standard for students who are reading at least at a mid third-grade level.

A Bad Case of the Stripes can also be utilized with many different activities to heighten the understanding level of the reading. Students could begin by using pictures or words to make a class list of beloved least beloved foods. Using a spreadsheet agenda to make a graph would also consolidate technology. Another idea is for students to make a lima bean method at home with a parent. They could then type the method and attach a photograph of your work at home, along with a recapitulate of the method to turn in.

Additional activities to be used with A Bad Case of the Stripes would be for children to sort a bag of different varieties of beans by size, color, and shape, and use a Venn diagram template to draw the sorting. By reiterating to the students that the cover of the book is quite colorful, you can then have them originate a new cover for the book. On the back of the page, clarify what the cover means, what was changed, and why. If you want to request for retrial to your linguistic students, feel free to assign a journal entry that is written to Camilla Cream. They should tell of something they also liked at first, but found out others did not. The children could give her tips for how to do things even if others do not approve.

There are a great many activities that can be used with the novel A Bad Case of the Stripes, and even more that students may also be able to suggest. The main idea is to have fun and enjoy reading, while tantalizing in tantalizing summaries and episode ideas within the content. Keep reading!
