The Foundation of Climate Science - Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming - 2010-05-06 - Even after months of personal attacks against climate scientists stemming from a manufactured scandal over stolen emails, the underlying science behind the need to stem the tide of heat-trapping emissions remains solid. To explain what we know about climate change, and why and how we know it, Chairman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming hosted top-level American climate scientists at a congressional hearing on Thursday, May 6, 2010. The scientists addressed the claims of deniers head-on. Thursday's panel featured a member of the investigative panel convened by the University of East Anglia and led by Lord Ron Oxburgh to review the stolen emails from that school's Climactic Research Unit. The "Oxburgh Inquiry" exonerated the scientists who were attacked following the emails, saying they "saw no evidence of any deliberate scientific malpractice in any of the work." The hearing also included three scientists involved in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports, which have also been attacked by climate science deniers. The Republican witness on the panel was Lord Christopher Walter Monckton, 3rd Viscount Monckton of Brenchley. WITNESSES: Dr. Lisa Graumlich, Director, School of Natural Resources and the Environment, University of Arizona, and member of the "Oxburgh Inquiry" panel; Dr. Chris Field ...

The Dolch and Fry Sight Words Lists Jump-Start the Road to Reading

Knowing sight words is one of the basic building blocks when learning how to read. A sight word is a word that children can read effortlessly without having to sound it out. Sight words also are commonly phonetically irregular and used with high frequency in most publications. To lay a foundation for learning how to read it is imperative to introduce sight words to children. This bolsters their reliance until they become more able to read the written word. Definitive explore that complex using sight words for reading education purposes supports this method. These studies were based on the installation that the English language is made up of some 500,000 words and only about 200 are utilized with regularity in printed text. Edward B. Fry and Edward William Dolch composed practical lists which today are still used and very respected by both teachers and parents.

The Dolch and Fry Sight Words Lists Jump-Start the Road to Reading

Dolch, who has a PhD, published a study in the 1940s that transformed the recipe used for teaching reading. He wrote about his principles in a book Problems in Reading and explained that children who can identify a inevitable core group of words by sight could legitimately learn to not only read but also realize better. Dolch methodically composed this list containing some 95 nouns and 220 service words. He studied English text, with a focus on children's reading books, and superior words to include in his list. When a young child learns the sight words, she or he becomes a more proficient reader in less time than other learn to read methods.

Then Fry (who has a PhD too) in 1996 vast on Dolch's explore and published a book titled 1,000 Instant Words. This book is a compilation of the most common of the sight words and the list is arranged so that the most often used ones are given precedence. His explore found that a mere 25 words (these words are listed on top) make up roughly one third of all items published. He discovered that one hundred words include roughly one half of all the publications written. Fry's list was composed based on these facts, as he worked to inspire young children to commit to memory these sight words to jump-start the reading process.

Both men understood how children should learn to read. Through repeated exposure to these normally used sight words, many of which are phonically irregular, new readers learn to identify them upon sight. This streamlines the learning to read process, allowing inevitable high frequency words to be recognized instantly, then the child need only to phonetically sound out new words seen in the text.

The Fry and Dolch lists are arranged by levels of advancing difficulty. Dolch's list of sight words was designed to be fully learned and mastered by the 3rd grade. Fry's list, on the other hand, was separated into grade levels specifically for the first 6 grades. Today, however, many educators are pushing students to know most, if not all, of the Dolch list by the first grade and Fry's list by the fourth grade.

Children can have an enjoyable time learning the Dolch and Fry words. Parents and educators use discrete methods to sustain new readers at once identify sight words. One such arrival is incorporating repetitive exposure to these common words into computer or board games. This can be a particularly efficient recipe since it is likely to capture and maintain a child's attention.

The Top 4 Math Skills to Know Before First Grade

The Top 4 Math Skills to Know Before First Grade

There are four crucial math concepts children need to know before entering first grade. Without a good grounding in these four areas, children will struggle and be unable to work beyond first grade math. The good news is that acquiring these four math skills is not hard to do.

The Top 4 Math Skills to Know Before First Grade

The first math skill children should specialist is being able to count in order (1 to 10, then 11 to 100). This is best done by using manipulatives such as an abacus, Cuisenaire Rods, etc... Have your child count in real world situations like setting the supper table for six. Initially, it's general for children to skip numbers. I've had the funny contact of listening to all my children count twelve, thirteen, fourteen, sixteen, seventeen and ending up with more than there indeed were.

The second math skill that is indeed leading to understand is a one-to-one correspondence. If a child doesn't understand this concept, then he will all the time be counting incorrectly due to double counting or skipping an item. The idea is a straightforward one, as a child counts, he should only be pointing to one item per number. This is a skill that can be mastered quickly with a minute practice.

The third math skill children should specialist is the potential to identify a quantity of objects without counting (up to ten). This will greatly improve a child's speed and fluency with the first ten numbers. A quick and easy way to practice this skill is by having a child hold up a positive amount of fingers and then quickly identifying how many fingers are up. At various times I have played a lighting round of "Guess how many fingers I have up?" with my young children. To keep them on their toes I will sometimes repeat the same number, while retention up separate fingers.

Being able to write and read numbers is the last math skill a child should know before going on to first grade math. Take this in several steps by first having your child use the sense of touch (i.e. Sandpaper numbers) at the same time that he is saying the number. The actual process of writing involves several steps, so you may need to break it down so that your child only practices one step at a time. For example: how to hold a pencil, what a definite amount looks like, and how to use the fingers to write a number. You can make this process fun by playing various games incorporating the skills.

By teaching four vital mathematical skills, Kindergartners will be well ready for First Grade. Be sick person and make the learning process as fun as possible, and before long those Kindergartners will be wowing you with their mathematical knowledge.

Types of Preschools from Which to Choose

3Rd Grade Math Activities

When I sent my daughter to nursery school, I wanted the most nurturing environment I could find. I chose a wonderful, progressive program in downtown Manhattan. A few years later, when we were interviewing downtown for a selective girl's school, the admissions director told me that when my daughter would be interviewed there, they would test her. She would be anticipated to draw circles, squares, triangles and rectangles. My eyes opened wide in shock and I said, "But my daughter doesn't know how to draw those!" She looked at my daughter's file and said (rather snootily), "Oh yes, your daughter went to one of those downtown play schools."

I was offended that she viewed the school I loved so much that way. But what could I do? Meanwhile, I ran into a neighbor who had sent her daughter to a fancy downtown customary nursery school. She was applying her daughter to the same girl's school. So I said to her, "Guess what! The kids are going to have to draw circles, squares, triangles and rectangles to get in." My neighbor said, "Oh, Erica can do that. They spent a whole month on a shape unit at her school." In fact, Erica had produced an entire shape book for every major shape (including diamonds!) during that unit.

So, when you select a nursery school for your child, whichever type of school you choose, remember that at the end, there is a test if you want private school or a gifted program. Even if you send your child to a quarterly ol' public kindergarten, she will still be tested in the very early days for placement in slow, average and industrialized ability groups. Some schools prepare kids for these tests and others don't. Frankly, I probably would have chosen the same progressive school I chose no matter what because we loved it. But I wish I had understood from the beginning that there would be an prominent test at the end and if the nursery school didn't prepare my child, I would have to.

Here are the five most base types or philosophies of preschools you'll see - Montessori, Progressive, Waldorf and Reggio Emilia.

It doesn't matter if you're looking at a preschool in a church, temple, co-op, private or public program - they are all likely to have adopted one of these approaches to education.

Montessori

Personally, I love Montessori schools and encourage you to tour one and see for yourself. Not only do kids learn a lot, but they are taught not to start a new project until they put the materials they were working on away. My daughter was always very messy and I have to wonder if she wouldn't have been had I sent her to a Montessori school when she was very young.

Marie Montessori started her schools in the early 20th Century as a way to train severely retarded children. The materials she created were so sufficient that they were later used with normally inviting children.

The goal of Montessori is to fabricate independence, self-esteem, and confidence in a child while fostering studying at his own pace.

In a Montessori classroom, the main interaction is between the child and the materials, not the trainer and the children. At first, the trainer demonstrates to the children the allowable use of each set of materials. Then, the child can take the materials out, place them on a mat, and use them as the trainer taught her. When she is finished, she puts it away before beginning someone else project. The emphasis is on self-directed learning.

Once the trainer has demonstrated the use of the materials, children work on them individually or in small groups. With this level of individualized instruction, children with studying delays or who are gifted often do well in a Montessori classroom.

The materials used in a Montessori classroom are built around three areas. 1) Practical life skills (folding shirts, tying shoelaces); 2) Sensory (handling geometric shapes, putting blocks into the right holes) and; 3) Language and mathematics (handling sandpaper letters and numbers, counting beads on a long chain). As you can imagine, children learn a great deal with this curriculum - numbers, letters, adding, subtracting, practical life skills, information and more.

The Montessori classroom is normally very bright, warm and inviting. There are normally any studying centers where children can scrutinize via hands-on, tactile materials.

Children are of mixed ages, typically three to six-years-old, with the older children helping the younger ones. Kids are encouraged to work at their own pace and build their own foundation of knowledge. When they emerge from Montessori, they are cooperative, organized, respectful of other children's work, and able to work independently.

Progressive (a.k.a. Developmental, Child-Centered, Bank street Model)

This is the type of program I chose for my kids and we loved it. Here, the philosophy is that children need to scrutinize and learn straight through imaginary play, art, and block building. The progressive classroom is normally set up as a series of "centers" where studying can take place using open-ended materials. There might be a fantasy play area, a clump of easels with paint, a block corner, a water table, puzzle area and more. Teachers set these environments up in response to what they see the children are interested in. They move among the areas and encourage the kids to pursue their own projects and ideas at these centers. Play is considered the "work" of children and is taken seriously.

Here, there is no pre-planned curriculum that kids follow. Since teachers are following the children's lead, what kids learn from year to year and between the morning and afternoon sessions may be different. Children work at their own pace, studying straight through play. The interaction is between the children as opposed to between the children and the materials (as with Montessori). At no prescribed points are children anticipated to learn any particular skill. In fact, specific studying straight through teaching is frowned upon. This explains why my daughter didn't have a "unit" on shapes - This just wasn't done in a progressive school.

Social interaction between children is very prominent in a progressive classroom. There is much talk about "community." separation between child and parent is seen as a major developmental step and a lot of time and vigor is spent on this. The atmosphere is informal. Kids often call teachers by their first names and you would never find uniforms in such programs. The school is normally more relaxed about when a child should be toilet trained.

Children who attend progressive schools are normally more independent, curious, creative and likely to ask questions. They often score higher on tests of question solving and curiosity, but lower on Iq tests. If your child will need to be tested for private school or a gifted program after attending a progressive school, you will want to be sure he has gained all the abilities Iq tests will assess.

In the customary classroom, there is a structured curriculum with specific goals for the children. Goals are built around teaching children math, letters, numbers, sounds, shapes, question solving, classifying, listening and more. The talk around the water table is most likely to be trainer directed instead of child led. Here, teachers instruct, direct, explain, and fabricate each lesson. Children learn from their teachers instead of their own exploration.

In this type of classroom, all the kids are likely to be working on the same action at the same time. For example, at Thanksgiving, they may all work on putting pre-cut construction paper together to make turkeys. The emphasis will be more on the terminated stock than the process. If you go into a classroom and see a bulletin board displaying 20 matching turkeys, you are probably in a customary school. At this type of school, kids might be working with worksheets to learn math and writing. There is an emphasis on school readiness.

Certainly there might be a free-choice period, but there is more emphasis on formal instruction. Children call teachers Mrs. X or Miss Y. You might find uniform or a dress code at this kind of school. At a customary program, they will be exact about production sure your child is toilet trained before the age of three. Studies have shown that kids who attend customary schools are less aggressive toward peers, more task oriented and do best on Iq and achievement tests. On the downside, they show less independence and initiative, their play is not as imaginative, and they score lower on tests of creativity.

Waldorf Schools

Developed by Rudolph Steiner in 1919, Waldorf programs aim to educate the whole child - "head, heart and hands." Classrooms are warm and homey, creative play is the order of the day, with a strong dose of teamwork and community. The trainer stays with the same class from preschool straight through eighth grade, which leads to a strong connection where the trainer truly knows your child.

Learning is hands on, straight through cooking, art projects, storytelling, singing, puppet shows, dress up and play. Academics are not emphasized in the early years, with reading readiness beginning in kindergarten and actual instruction beginning in first grade. "Main lessons" are taught in blocks of 1.5 to 3 hours a day with each subject block continuing 3 to 5 weeks. This way, children touch the curriculum as deeply and vividly as possible. Activities that are seen as extras at many schools are core to Waldorf philosophy - art, gardening, and foreign language. In the early years,, much studying takes place straight through art versus lecturing and rote learning. All children knit and play the recorder.

In the early years, Waldorf schools don't use textbooks. Instead, children have their own "main part books" which the fill out during the year, recording their experiences. Later, textbooks are introduced for unavoidable classes such as math and grammar. Grades do not begin until middle school. Instead, teachers write detailed reports about each child's amelioration and progress.

The use of electronic media by young children, especially Tv, is discouraged in Waldorf Schools.

Reggio Emilia Schools

Loris Malaguzzi founded the Reggio Emilia approach at a city in Italy called Reggio Emilia. Newsweek Magazine hailed them the best preschools in the world in 1991. Their approach sees children as being competent, resourceful, curious, imaginative and inventive.

In a Reggio Emilia school, educators play close concentration to the look and feel of the classroom, which is often referred to as the "third teacher." The goal is to create a room that is beautiful, joyful, inviting and stimulating. Children's work is on display along with collections of leaves or rocks they have gathered from field trips. There is natural light, plants, mirrors, photographs and children's work to capture the attention. Different centers are placed throughout the classroom. They are devoted to dramatic play, art, writing, sand/water, reading, math, manipulatives, blocks and science. Much opinion goes in to the fabricate of a Reggio Emilia classroom in order to support their multi-sensory approach to learning.

After the trainer organizes the classroom in a way that is rich with possibilities, she invites the children to undertake exploration and question solving. By observing the children, she learns what they are interested in and uses that information to act as a reserved supply for them, asking them questions, discovering their ideas, helping them crate hypotheses and theories to test. There is no pre-set curriculum. Teachers and parents are seen as partners in studying with the children. Teachers document the children's discussions, remarks and activities straight through notes, videos and photographs. This makes studying visible, helping parents understand what their children are doing, teachers understand the children better, and children see that their work is valued.

Long-term projects emerge out of spontaneous play and exploration with children. They may last from days to any months. Depending on children's interests, topics for projects are decided (with the children's input). Teachers bring in materials, books, questions, and opportunities for the children to scrutinize the topic further. Exploration may take place straight through field trips, discussion, drawing, sculpture, puppetry, drama, shadow and dramatic play, and writing.

Combination Schools

Some schools use a combination of the approaches mentioned above. You might find a program using the "best" of Montessori, while also spending lots of time on separation and socialization, which a pure Montessori school wouldn't do. Some very structured and customary schools will throw in a few elements of progressive into their program and say they are a combination school. This wouldn't be a true combined approach unless the teachers are allowing the scholastic work to evolve out of the kids' interests.

How do you know which educational philosophy a school follows? Look at their materials. Ask when you visit. But most of all, scrutinize when you visit. Many schools are very clear about who they are and which philosophy they follow. Other directors will tell you they are are a combination of progressive and traditional, but when you observe, you will clearly see they are one or the other.

Children attending a customary or Montessori school are more likely to "graduate" with the types of skills private schools will be looking for. customary schools teach the skills and Montessori materials lend themselves to children studying these skills independently. This isn't to say that children attending a progressive, Waldorf or Reggio Emilia school won't fetch these skills straight through the program - many do. But if your child doesn't, you won't be getting a call from the Director raising a red flag that your child can't draw circles, squares or triangles. These directors believe that children will learn these skills when they are interested and developmentally better.

One approach isn't necessarily best than another. My recommendation is that you visit each type of school and decide which feels like the best fit. You may decide that your child is best remarkable for whether a customary or Montessori education. There are other factors you'll want to reconsider in deciding on a preschool, but by exploring the discrete philosophies first, you'll be able to rule out types of schools that don't feel right for your child.

Homeschool Science - Teach Speed, Velocity, and Acceleration

A simple, small toy car can be used to clarify these concepts. In addition, use real-life examples before using mechanical examples.

3Rd Grade Math Activities

Speed
Show the toy car entertaining across a table. Ask what speed is.

Give the formula that speed is length divided by time. Let the pupil make up examples of speed based on trips they have taken in the car.

The formula is Rate = Distance/Time. Use the formula on the examples they made up.

Velocity
Velocity is speed in a given direction.
Show your toy car entertaining in one direction. Then you turn the car around and head back in the opposite direction towards where you started. The speed may be the same. But the velocity is different.

How would you part velocity? The total length from the starting point to the ending point divided by the time elapsed. It is not the same as the total length the object moved.

In an additional one example, show the car entertaining in one direction, then have it turn at an angle and keep moving. The ending length from the point started to the point ended would be dissimilar than the total length traveled.

Velocity is stated as a length in a given direction using the compass.

Acceleration
Students are regularly customary with the view of acceleration, or speeding up. It is defined as the turn in speed over time.

In physics, meters per second per second is most ordinarily used. Again, the straightforward toy car can precisely clarify this.

Many cars are about 5 meters long, so let the pupil create a paper scale where the length of your toy car is 5 meters. Make a scale the length of at least six cars.

In one second your car accelerates from standing still to five meters per second. The next second the car is entertaining ten meters per second. Then the car is entertaining fifteen meters per second. What is the rate of acceleration?

The straightforward formula is turn in Speed divided by Time. Since the car moved 15 meters in 3 seconds, it is accelerating at a rate of 5 meters per second per second.

Let the pupil make up added examples of their own. Then use the formula to solve their own examples.

Hands-on examples make science concepts easier to learn.

efficient Time administration Strategies For Teachers

efficient Time administration Strategies For Teachers

While it is inherent for a instructor to be "successful" for a while, if sufficient time administration strategies are not in place, that successful instructor will grow increasingly exhausted, will begin to feel dissatisfied with the job, and will begin to fall behind with both paper grading and episode planning. Once behind, it takes a new semester to get back on track. Time administration strategies well are principal for teachers.

efficient Time administration Strategies For Teachers

Effective Time administration Strategies For Teachers:

1. Originate routines for the mundane tasks. Many of the main time wasters of each class duration are the mundane tasks that have to be done--like take attendance, pass back homework, give assignments to students who were absent yesterday, get homework from those students for the day before, collect homework, and on and on. Many teachers will be surprised to find out that they do not have to do all of those tasks themselves and/or, they do not need to (in fact, should not) be done at the starting of the period.

A disposition is naturally a process for accomplishing a task with the least effort--hopefully with No exertion on your part. There are many routines you can Originate for just about everything. Students should already have assignment sheets in expanding to at least one on the wall. Have absent students get assignments there or from a "study buddy"--but never from you at the starting of the period. This is just one sample. Look online for "classroom routines." Also talk to other teachers. Eliminate or pass off to someone else as many of those limited tasks as possible.

I used white boards approximately daily for years, but I seldom had to touch boards, markers, or erasers--the students did it all. I had homework folders for make-up work, for graded homework, and for non-graded class sets of homework. I never collected papers or passed them back--the students did. There are many such examples.

2. Have copies you will need for a unit printed before the unit starts. One of the worst places to be, especially on a Monday morning, is the copy room trying to get copies ready for your first class in five minutes. I know this will be easier after you have taught one year, but get help from a colleague, so that you will know what handouts you will need for the next unit. Get those turned in one to two weeks before you need them. No more wasting time in the copy room.

3. Originate homework grading routines that lessen the load. Too many teachers think they need to very thought about grade every qoute of every homework assignment. I started out that way, until I found out that students routinely copy each others' homework. I was spending hours to grade work that wasn't even done by that student. So lighten the load. Alternate grading methods so that sometimes students grade definite problems in class, sometimes you just give an exertion grade, sometimes pick only one qoute to grade, and sometimes don't even collect the assignment if you are distinct that you have thoroughly covered the material in class. (That last one feels like a sin, but it isn't in the top 10.)

4. Enhance your classroom administration skills. Very often, a large quantum of a class duration gets taken up with disciple issues. sufficient classroom administration is a skill that can be learned. discover some teachers that you know have few problems with discipline. Study sufficient techniques. Take a class. (A Jim Fay class--"Dealing With The Difficult Student"--literally solved all of my discipline issues.) Don't let poor student behavior rob you of teaching time.

5. Never leave the building on one day until you are ready for the next day. This one takes a while to get into place, but try very hard to use your weekends to get you entire week "roughed-out." In addition, get Monday thoroughly planned and ready. Then, on Monday, don't leave the building until you have Tuesday totally ready. Do the same each day.

One year I got behind. I would go to school each morning only ready for 1st period. The next duration was a planning duration which I used to get ready for my 2nd prep. I used my lunch to plan my 3rd prep. Fortunately, I only had three preps that year. Every duration of everyday was filled with stress. A group meeting meant disaster. Things stayed that way until there was a vacation that allowed me to get caught up. You have to avoid this at all costs. The wear and tear on your body is awful!

During your learning year while all is moving faster than you are, remember that the students will be Ok if your episode plans aren't stocked with moving activities. Do what you must, eliminate what you can, and accept "good enough" on those episode plans. If your students are learning, that's good enough!

Do you know about - What Is The Degree Of A Polynomial?

3Rd Grade Math Worksheets! Again, for I know. Ready to share new things that are useful. You and your friends.

Degree of a polynomial

What I said. It isn't outcome that the actual about 3Rd Grade Math Worksheets. You look at this article for facts about what you wish to know is 3Rd Grade Math Worksheets.

How is What Is The Degree Of A Polynomial?

We had a good read. For the benefit of yourself. Be sure to read to the end. I want you to get good knowledge from 3Rd Grade Math Worksheets.

Polynomials are the main part of algebra and the understanding the polynomials makes algebra easy. In this presentation I am going to account for the degree of a polynomial. Many of my students wonder, when I introduce them with the degree of the polynomials because they are learning about the degree of an angle since grade four or five but degree of a polynomial is new to them. Students are also aware about degree of climatic characteristic since their elementary grades, but not about degree of a polynomial till grade 8 or 9.

So, what is the degree of a polynomial?

Degree of a polynomial is the top power of a term in a polynomial. Therefore, this degree is not like the degree of an angle or degree centigrade temperature, but the degree of a polynomial is all about the exponents or powers of variables in the polynomials.

To understand the belief mathematically, think the following examples of polynomials having separate degrees:

1. 2

2. 2a

3. 3a²

4. 3a²+ 5

5. 2a²b³c

6. 2a²+ 3abc - 9

7. X³ + 2x² - 3x + 2

8. X³y + x²y³z - 6

Solutions:

1. In problem whole one, "2" is constant polynomial that is a polynomial without any variable. The degree of constant polynomials is "zero". So the degree of the monomial "2" is zero.

2. In problem whole two, "2a" is a monomial with changeable "a" having power one, hence the degree of monomial "2a" is l (power of the variable).

3. In problem whole three, "3a²" is again a monomial with the changeable "a" having power "2", hence the degree of monomial "3a²" is 2(power of the variable).

4. In problem whole four, "3a²+ 5" is a binomial with the changeable "a" having power two, hence the degree is 2.

5. In problem whole five, "2a²b³c" is a monomial with three variables, "a", "b" and "c". In a polynomial when a term has more than one variable, add the powers of all the variables to find the degree of that term.

So, add the powers of variables "a", "b" and "c". As "a" got power "2", "b" got power "3" and "c" got power "1".

By adding 3, 2 and 1, we get 6 which is the degree of the monomial "2a²b³c".

6. In problem whole six, "2a²+ 3abc - 9" is a trinomial piquant three variables. In first term there is only one changeable "a" with degree two, the second term have three variables with degree one each, but to find the degree of the second term add all the powers of the variables. So, by adding powers of "a", "b" and "c" in term two we get its degree equal to 3. Third term is "- 9", a constant, hence with degree zero. Now the degree of this trinomial is represented by its second term as it has the top power which is "3", hence the degree of the given trinomial is "3".

7. In problem whole seven, "x³ + 2x² - 3x + 2" is polynomial with four terms and top power is "3" hence the degree is "3".

8. In problem whole eight, "x³y + x²y³z - 6" is again a trinomial with many variables. But the second term has the top power (add all the powers of the variables) which is equal to "6". Hence the degree of the trinomial is given by its second term and is "6".

Michigan Week Celebration Ideas For Michigan Elementary Schools

No.1 Article of 3Rd Grade Math Practice Advertisements

Officially, "Michigan Week" starts the third Saturday in May and runs the whole next week. The dates for Michigan Week in 2010 and 2011 will be from May 15th - May 21st. Michigan Week is a time to celebrate all the great things about the state of Michigan, and a great way for Michigan elementary schools to encourage students to learn more about their state.

Many Michigan elementary schools celebrate Michigan Week with activities that include school-wide projects, inspiring assemblies, and presentations from Michigan artists and authors. Here are some more creative Michigan Week celebration ideas:

Michigan Grows!

Michigan Week Celebration Ideas For Michigan Elementary Schools

Many yummy fruits and vegetables grow in Michigan. Blueberries, cherries, apples, grapes and peaches are just a few of the diverse Michigan crops. These could form the theme for Michigan Week. Coloring pages, word puzzles, artwork and songs could all focus on crops grown in Michigan. The children could write stories about some of the crops their state grows or on their favourite fruit or veggie that grows in Michigan. Computer class could also incorporate the theme. Using a program such as Kids Pix, the children could draw the fruit. Older children can do some online investigate on the subject. The week could end with a picnic featuring some of the many goodies found in Michigan.

The Many Bridges of Michigan

Michigan is home to some major bridges. The Ambassador Bridge, Blue Water Bridge, Mackinac Bridge and the International Bridge can all be found in Michigan. Have fun discovering bridges during Michigan Week. There are many ways this can be done. One such way is to give each grade a different bridge to do a task on. At the end of the week, the projects could be set up in the school auditorium for all to enjoy. The younger children can create bridges out of blocks and the older kids can make creative bridge masterpieces. Use your imagination as to what to make bridges out of. Even empty cardboard boxes can serve the purpose for building a bridge. Art classes can incorporate the bridge theme by using different textures and techniques. Each class could make its own mural showcasing the bridges of Michigan.

A Taste of Michigan

This theme may complement the "Michigan Grows!" theme or may be used on its own. The students can regain their popular Michigan treats. These can be based on their cultural background or just house favorites. The children in each class could conclude (have a vote) on which formula to make at the end of the week. The measurements and calculations of amount of servings needed for the recipes can also provide an occasion to demonstrate and custom "real world" math problems. Group could be practiced, as well as multiplication and pie charts along the same theme.

Celebrate the State Reptile - The Painted Turtle

The painted turtle, being the state reptile, could form the theme of your Michigan Week festivities. Crafts, stories, artwork and science lessons could all focus on the popular painted turtle. On the technological side, older students could investigate and then organize a story on what they have discovered. These stories, along with together with artwork, could be presented at the end of the week assembly. "The Tortoise and The Hare" could be read to the preschoolers by the teacher or by some of the older students. Teachers could passage further books about turtles to make ready to the children.

Michigan Authors

The center of concentration surrounding this theme would be Michigan born authors. Books written by Michigan authors would be highlighted and literacy and book writing would be encouraged. As a astonishing tie-up to this week, a visit from one of the featured authors would be a bonus. He/she could read an excerpt from one of their stories for the children at the assembly. Some of the older students may be able to perform one or two short skits, based on one of the books.

Michigan Fest

The astonishing state of Michigan has so many unique festivals and society celebrations. From the tulip festival in Holland to the Baby Food Festival in Fremont, Michigan knows how to throw a party. Your school could have a "festival day", where each classroom hosts a mini Michigan themed festival. The classroom festivals could be based off a festival that already takes place in Michigan, or a new celebration that the class invents.

It's tempting to think of ourselves like characters in a video game, with a unavoidable fixed pool of pre-programmed skills we can't ever deviate from. That's how I used to think of myself. As a kid, I was good at running, reading, and programming, but I couldn't do math, or sing, or-- this is a little embarrassing-- tie my shoes. But eventually, I discovered a qualified "meta-skill", the quality to pick up whatever new skills I wanted. I learned how to teach myself new abilities. I didn't even need a teacher-- just a book, or even just a website.

separate Kinds of Skills

Let's take a look at some of the separate types of skills in the world.

Innate Skills Vs. Learned Skills

An innate skill is one you have from birth. A learned skill is one you pick up at some point later in life, from a classroom or a book or a teacher or any other method. unavoidable abilities obviously fall in one type or the other. The quality to pilot a jet is obviously not something whatever had when they came out of the womb. On the other hand, the quality to see colors is something you're born with (provided you're not totally color blind).

That last example seems roughly trivial; seeing colors is hardly really a "skill", so much as it's just something built into your body. As a matter of fact, the Only innate skills are trivial ones like this. This is a good thing, because it means you can gain any other skill you like-- along with ones which some population mistakenly think are innate.

The best example is math. A coarse complaint is: "I'm just not any good at math." This sentiment reflects a confidence that population are naturally born being good at math, or not. This is an unempowering confidence system, leaving us at the whims of fate. I was terrible at math until the seventh grade. I opinion I was just born that way. Then one day I was seduced by the gorgeous illustrations in Euclid's "Elements", and as I read straight through the old propositions in that book, I realized math was learnable. Now I'm a third year math PhD student!

Hobbies And Chores

Another way to divide skills up is to distinguish hobbies from chores. A hobby quality is something you do for fun, something that makes you feel like a child again, something you'd do even if you weren't being paid. Chores are things we do to put food on the table. For most people, playing cards is a hobby, while washing the dishes is a chore.

What determines either an quality is a hobby or a chore, is either we do it because we select to or because we're forced to. But here, again, the dichotomy isn't quite what it seems. The truth is, we're hardly forced to do anything. An accountant is not forced to do accounting: he all the time has the option of quitting his job. Even a soldier doesn't have to fight, having the option to opt for court martial and jail instead.

So with the exception of the basics like breathing and eating, every chore is something which we chose to do. No matter how lousy someone's job is, they're there because they chose to be there, and they can leave at any time. Yes, I am saying what you think I'm saying: every chore is a hobby. This counterintuitive claim reflects a deeper metaphysical asset of the universe: we all get exactly what we want-- just sometimes we don't really know or direct our deepest inner desire.

Skills And Metaskills

This group isn't really a division, but a hierarchy: every meta-ability is an ability, but not vice versa. The "meta" prefix indicates that the quality acts upon other abilities. For example, when I learned that it was possible to teach myself whatever skill I desire, that's an example of a metaskill: the quality to learn any skill. Other examples consist of the quality to teach any skill, the quality to analyze any skill, the quality to write about any skill, and so on.

The coolest thing about these "meta" abilities is that they can act on themselves recursively. For example, as someone with the meta-ability to teach myself any skill, in singular I can teach myself more about self-teaching. someone who can teach any skill, can, in particular, also teach that teaching ability.

Conclusion

Be wary of buying into arbitrary divisions among talents-- there's normally more to these divisions than meets the eye. When in doubt, all the time go with whichever confidence is more empowering. either you're right or wrong, you're more empowered either way. Even if a limiting confidence were true, it would still be limiting.

JumpStart 4th Grade - Intro Tube. Duration : 5.57 Mins.

We had a good read. For the benefit of yourself. Be sure to read to the end. I want you to get good knowledge from 3Rd Grade Math Games. The intro to the 1996 version of JumpStart Adventures 4th Grade: Haunted Island. I love this game! When I was a kid, it did a fantastic job at both educating me and scaring the CRAP out of me. It was awesome. Unfortunately, this version of the game was recently replaced with a more kid friendly version. The plot was that you, the player, was a fourth grader who was absent from school one day. On that day the rest of the player's class had a substitute teacher, Ms. Grunkle. She was a witch who turned all of the other 13 kids into monsters and locked them up in the attic of her house. Her house was on an island called Haunted Island, and the player had to go there to rescue them. Helping the player was a purple bat named Flap. The player reversed the spells Ms. Grunkle cast on the kids by completing challenges given by a gypsy named Madame Pomreeda. By completing the challenges, the player was given items that belonged to the kids. Once four of a kid's items were found, they would be transformed back to normal. The player also needed to collect 25 keys to open the doors in Ms. Grunkle's house in order to reach the attic. This game and its characters are NOT mine. They are (c) Knowledge Adventure, Inc. Special thanks to my brother for helping me record this.

How to coming Math Word Problems on the Pharmacy Tech Exams

The Big Secret: Don't think about the question until you write down all of the factors.

How to coming Math Word Problems on the Pharmacy Tech Exams

Sounds too easy, right? But it's where everybody gets stuck. Start by thought about reading over the entire request from start to close and decode the foremost factors. Then, go back and slowly read it again, writing down only the critical factors. Factors aren't just numbers, but also things like days, percent signs, p.m., or anyone will help keep things level for you. Also, neatly write numbers below or above numbers that will be added or subtracted and set-up any fractions.

Write an Equal sign where it belongs

This is critical; the equal sign is like a trigger to our brains that we've been taught since 3rd grade. Now that the question is written in terms with an equal sign in place, the light will ordinarily go on and you'll start working the problem. From here, the only hang-ups you may encounter are things like not knowing conversions or needing to change to all like factors. Even if you write down the factors wrong the first time, you'll likely see how to re-arrange them and get started.

Sloppy writing is not allowed in math:

Your success at math is contingent on writing all of the factors neatly and organized. When you come over a math word problem, the first thought that should come into your head is to grab for a piece of paper to write it out. As you jot it down, write neatly and leave yourself some space between lines.Beware: Exam writers prey on your bad habits.

When I generate institution math word problems for the free institution exams, I have to think up three dummy answers. How do I do it? It may sound sadistic, but I try to reconsider what answers would come up if man was sloppy. I think about things like if a factor was left out, or if man did the equation in a rush, or their head. Exam writers who write for lawful exams do the same thing. After all, the exams are used to weed out unqualified applicants. If you want to pass the exam, get in the institution of writing things down completely, neatly and organized.

When you get to a request that's a math word problem.

First, relax and know that all of the facts are in there for you to solve it. Then take a deep breath and ensue these steps: Don't try to rush or use a short-cut

Read it at least twice

Write down the only critical factors

Put an equal sign where it belongs
