2nd Grade Spelling Words and Skills

No.1 Article of 3Rd Grade Math Practice

Which spelling words are the most foremost ones for you to teach to your 2nd grader? We'll explicate two types of words on which you should focus. Then we'll give you a list of 100 basic 2nd grade spelling words.

1. High-frequency words confident words are used more than any others in the English language. The Dolch list of sight words and the Fry list of instant words both comprise high-frequency words. Since these appear most often in print, second graders should identify them on sight; that is, without stopping to think and sound out the word. These are "service" words, such as after, does, and such.

But students will also be writing these same words a lot. So they need to learn how to spell them easily, too. Practice these words frequently.

2. Words that ensue coarse spelling patterns It's impossible to predict and "pre-teach" every word that your child will ever want to write. So it's also wise at each grade level to introduce some coarse spelling rules and patterns for words your second grader is likely to use.

After reviewing words with short vowel sounds, such as bat, red, pink, stop and mug, you'll also need to go over long vowel words that end in silent e at the end, such as make, file, and pole. Also go over some other long-vowel spellings as well. Consider these: feet, sky, and also. Hopefully your second grader learned most of these in first grade.

Then it's time to move on to some or all of these spelling skills:

A. coarse vowel pairs. This includes ow/ou words (crowd, sound, and loud), oo words (look, book) and others.

B. Words with r-influenced vowels. Many, many words comprise ar, er, ir, or, our, and ur. Consider teaching such coarse words as part, father, sir, more, four, fur which can big a big part of your child's vocabulary.

C. Words with consonant blends. Your second graders will be using more and more words with combination's such as br, ch, gl and str.

D. Plurals, both regular and irregular. You'll mostly work on adding -s and -es to spelling words like girls, houses, boxes, and bushes. But there are a few irregulars that should be taught at this level: men, women, feet, teeth, mice and others.

E. Adding coarse suffixes. Practice spelling words that end in -ed and -ing.

F. Contractions. Introduce a few of the most coarse ones, along with don't, aren't, can't and there's. Be sure to teach the concept, not just the spelling.

G. Teach words with igh. Second graders often will use high, night, sight, right, might.

H. Words with silent letters. These comprise snow, comb, talk, and knee.

I. Homophones. It's not too early to begin to teach the literal, usage of to/too/two, there/their/they're and other coarse sets of homophones.

J. Words of interest to the child. If a child is going to be writing about a topic, he needs to learn how to spell words linked to it. So if you're request students to write a story about Christmas, for example, you'll need to teach him to spell the words he wants to use in the story.

Now, as promised, here's our list of 100 basic second grade words. Of course, every spelling curriculum may have a slightly separate list. Our list includes both Dolch/Fry sight words and words that ensue some of the basic spelling patterns listed above. (Note: Some of these were probably taught in 1st grade and may be reviewed again in 3rd grade. Don't worry. Repetition is a good thing!)
